About Me 2018-01-01T08:47:41+00:00

Manchester & Online from January 2018

I am a therapist trained in evidence based Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. After several years working in the heart of Shanghai in China, I have returned to  the UK.

In January 2018 I am opening a clinic in Manchester and Online.

I want to help you achieve your goals. My approach is down to earth and practical. It is focused on now, and the future, rather than looking back into the distant past. This means that change can usually happen quickly. Treatment rarely lasts for more than 6×1 hour sessions, often less, and the first session is FREE.

In addition to my professional therapy training and experience, I have extensive experience as a teacher and trainer. I keep up to date with and apply the latest research, and my academic and professional background enables me to do this effectively.

The combination of effective strategies and a good therapeutic relationship is the best recipe for success.

My Background

I was born in Lancashire, and graduated from Oxford University with a BA (Hons) and MA.

I am a qualified teacher and highly experienced in education and corporate training (universities, multinational companies, adults and high school). I have worked in the UK (including Manchester University) and more recently for several years in Shanghai, China, where I won a government prize for my work.

In Shanghai I also worked as a consultant for Cambridge University Press, and an examiner for the British Council.

I have extensive experience of successfully working with many kinds of people, and many issues: helping them to achieve more of their potential.

Therapeutic / Coaching Approach

I am fully qualified in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (often called Hypno-CBT). This is the combined use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness and Hypnotherapy. It is an evidence based approach, offering some of the most effective available tools for personal development and change. There are many tools, so programmes can be tailored to individual circumstances and goals.

I am professionally registered and regulated by both the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council and the General Hypnotherapy Register

I am very interested in health and nutrition and have studied Advanced Medical Nutrition at Manchester Metropolitan University at Master level. This enables me to provide extensive support for people wanting to lose weight and/or eat more healthily.

In the UK

I have returned to the UK and can see clients in central Manchester from January 2018, or via Skype.

I can help with a range of issues, including weight, anxiety, changing habits and personal development.

Most issues are about making a change of some kind. As I take a goal focused, forward looking approach, the programmes are usually short.

Six sessions or fewer are normally sufficient. The initial consultation is FREE – call or email me to schedule an appointment. During that session we will discuss your situation, set goals, and plan the programme. There is no obligation.

Tailor made programmes are available for companies – call to arrange an appointment. Depending on the nature of the course, I can travel anywhere.

Setting Goals and Achieving Them

To do this I believe in setting clear goals, and formulating a plan to achieve the goal, using multiple strategies. Progress is then assessed against the plan, an changes made where necessary.

I do not believe that one strategy works for everyone – all the evidence tells us that it does not. However, all the strategies I use are focused on making a difference now and are backed by academic research into their effectiveness. Hypnotherapy can be used to help to reinforce, visualise, rehearse and focus on the new behaviour.

Transferrable Skills

Another key feature of my approach is that the strategies that you learn whilst managing one issue – such as stress, or losing weight – are skills that can then be applied in other areas of life.

You acquire a tool kit that works for you – and that you can carry with you.

I believe that a combination of my experience – including my teaching and training experience – my academic background, that helps me keep my practice up to date with the latest research, and my  personal commitment to my clients’ goals, means that, working together, we can achieve a lot.
